Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Our parish is deeply grateful for your decision to be an Extraordinary Minister. Your service and dedication are important parts of our parish life. It is a privilege to be in the sanctuary as our Savior, Jesus Christ, becomes truly present, body, blood, soul and divinity, just as He was at the Last Supper and Calvary, and therefore Extraordinary Ministers are chosen from those who display a desire for a more intimate union with Our Lord and God, Jesus Christ. Saint Thomas Aquinas said, “The celebration of the Holy Mass is as valuable as the death of Jesus on the Cross.”

What is your role?

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are called to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion or exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. There are three roles:

  • Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass — Assists when the ordained ministers (priests and deacons) need assistance to distribute communion in a timely manner to those who are present at Mass.
  • Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion outside of Mass — Appointed to bring communion to the sick and elderly.
  • Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to expose and repose the Blessed Sacrament for Eucharistic Adoration.

An EMHC must be a practicing Catholic, at least 18 years of age, baptized, confirmed, received First Communion, reverential, respectful of his/her faith and the Blessed Sacrament, and must also be in good standing with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
